Discount Airline to Offer More Travel Luxuries

By SUSAN CAREY

JetBlue Airways Corp., following the airline industry trend of offering travel upgrades for a fee, said Wednesday it will add early boarding and access to more overhead bin space to its roomier seat option. The Forest Hills, N.Y. discount airline said it is rebranding its three-year-old Even More Legroom product as Even More Space by adding the additional attributes for the same price.

The carrier also said it has begun to offer Even More Speed, which allows passengers to go through expedited security screening at 15 airports. Initially, purchases of Even More Space will include the speedier security. An airline spokesman said eventually they will be sold separately as upgrade options, but there is no timeline for that, nor is there information of how much the security-lane option will cost on its own.

The four to six inches of additional space on JetBlue's A320 and E190 jetliners costs $10 to $75 per one-way flight, depending on the distance. JetBlue said in January the extra legroom generated more than $85 million in revenue in 2010.

The expedited security lanes are in Austin, Texas; Baltimore; Buffalo, N.Y.; Charlotte, N.C.; Chicago; Fort Lauderdale and Jacksonville, Fla.; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport; Newark, N.J.; San Francisco; Seattle and Washington's Dulles International Airport. JetBlue will add Boston to the list in mid-July, the carrier said, and other destinations will come later.
