Got Fourth of July travel plans? Better book now

Although airfares for the holiday weekend have held steady for most of June, they are expected to jump 10% by Thursday, based on Travelocity's historical airfare data.

That gives last-minute vacationers very little time left to book their trips before prices start climbing.

Thanks to rising fuel costs and consumer demand, airfares are already higher than they were last year. The average domestic round-trip airfare is $388, up 7% from 2010's Fourth of July holiday weekend, according to Travelocity.

But many Americans are determined to go on a vacation this summer, even though discretionary spending is tight.

On a budget? Take a road trip
Once travelers arrive at their destinations things should become a little more wallet-friendly.
"Though there's not much wiggle room in airfare pricing over a holiday weekend, there's a lot more opportunity to find hotel deals," said Genevieve Shaw Brown, editorial director at Travelocity.

Although the average daily rate, or ADR, at hotels is $144, up 9% from 2010, Brown said that many hotels are offering special deals and packages that will help cut costs significantly.
To boost value without compromising rates, hotels are increasing the number of promotional offerings available. This summer there are a slew of offers, such as free nights, room upgrades, resort credits, spa treatments, rounds of golf and complimentary breakfasts that travelers can take advantage of.

"That's a great way to save when you're not getting a big discount on the hotel rate," said Orbitz senior editor Jeanenne Tornatore. "You're saving money you would otherwise be spending."
The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas, for example, is offering 20% off breakfast and complimentary line passes and admission to its LAVO Nightclub over the Fourth of July weekend. Vacationers at the Westin Resort & Spa in Cancun, Mexico can choose to stay a fourth night for free or opt for a $200 food and beverage credit and room upgrade (subject to availability).
"These deals are literally everywhere," Brown said.

Mary Song, founder of travel site Yuupon.com , advises travelers to look for specific pages on travel web sites dedicated to the Fourth of July or to even conduct a search on Google for "Fourth of July travel deals" to find the best offerings.
Many times, she said, there are specials that are not even listed on a hotel's own site.

Gas prices drop, just in time for summer road travel

Drivers are rejoicing as pump prices across California continue to drop. According to AAA, which tracks gas prices as a service to consumers, every Northern California metro area tracked by the organization saw a double digit decrease at the pump over the past month.

According to ModestoGasPrices.com, which tracks gasoline prices in the Turlock area, a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline could be found for $3.59 on Friday — a 57 cent difference from the averaged $4.16 per gallon available the first week in May.

The state’s average for a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline is $3.94, down 32 cents since last month’s AAA report on May 10. For perspective, that’s 86 cents higher than California’s average price on this date last year. Among all 50 states, California now has the fourth highest state average price for regular, unleaded gasoline. Alaska is first and Hawaii, Connecticut, and Illinois are tied for the second highest average price, while New York is third.

Northern California gas prices are now averaging $3.92, down 33 cents from last month. In the San Francisco Bay Area, motorists can expect to pay an average price of $4.02, which is a 30-cent drop. The national average price of $3.70 is down by 25 cents, which is $1 more than the national price on this date last year, when it was $2.70.

“Consumers continue to experience welcome relief at the pump as gasoline markets in the U.S. are returning to relatively lower prices,” explained AAA Northern California spokesperson Matt Skryja. “Gasoline demand is down over the last week after it steadily rose for the four weeks prior. Speculation about where oil demand might go for the second half of 2011 continues to cause controversy worldwide.”

At its meeting last week in Vienna, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) was unable to come to a consensus about whether its members should increase oil production to meet the rising global demand forecast for the remainder of 2011. The meeting ended in confusion and without consensus on production levels which is unusual for a group that relies on unification to influence the market. The Saudi Oil Minister has now said that his country will meet the needs of the market regardless of the disagreement. This action is expected to apply downward pressure on crude prices. OPEC member countries collectively hold 79 percent of global crude oil reserves and account for 44 percent of global production. The United States imports almost six million barrels per day of crude oil from OPEC countries, accounting for nearly a third of U.S. consumption.

While the drop in gasoline prices comes just in time for summer road trips, there are still ways to stretch every dollar spent at the pump. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends driving more efficiently. The department offers six tips for achieving this:

1.) Drive sensibly — Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town. Sensible driving is also safer for you and others, so you may save more than gas money.
2.) Observe the speed limit —While each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed (or range of speeds), gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. You can assume that each 5 mph driven over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.30 per gallon for gas. Observing the speed limit is also safer.

3.) Remove excess weight - Avoid keeping unnecessary items in the vehicle, especially heavy ones. An extra 100 pounds in a vehicle could reduce the MPG by up to 2 percent. The reduction is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle's weight and affects smaller vehicles more than larger ones.

4.) Avoid excessive idling — Idling can use a quarter to a half gallon of fuel per hour, depending on engine size and air conditioner (AC) use. Turn off the engine when the vehicle is parked. It only takes a few seconds worth of fuel to restart a vehicle. Turning the engine on and off excessively, however, may increase starter wear.

5.) Use cruise control — Using cruise control on the highway helps maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will save gas.

6.) Use overdrive gears — When using overdrive gearing, a car's engine speed goes down. This saves gas and reduces engine wear.

Why you must allow your child to travel for summer vacation

Traveling abroad is a privilege which many professionals who work with and on children agree can expand kids' knowledge, awareness of and appreciation of the world; and give them broader perspectives on issues.

Several surveys and even the US Department of Education have concluded that children who travel over summer breakdo better in reading, math and their general knowledge than those who do not. Traveling enables kids to broaden their horizons and learn that the world is not made up of the limited confines of their neighborhoods.

Because not all can afford to travel overseas, parents can use summer vacation to take trips to museums, zoos, local beaches and historical monuments to help expand their children's broaden their experiences. Families should make an effort to make sure they get out and travel as much as possible with their children this summer.

Discount Airline to Offer More Travel Luxuries

By SUSAN CAREY

JetBlue Airways Corp., following the airline industry trend of offering travel upgrades for a fee, said Wednesday it will add early boarding and access to more overhead bin space to its roomier seat option. The Forest Hills, N.Y. discount airline said it is rebranding its three-year-old Even More Legroom product as Even More Space by adding the additional attributes for the same price.

The carrier also said it has begun to offer Even More Speed, which allows passengers to go through expedited security screening at 15 airports. Initially, purchases of Even More Space will include the speedier security. An airline spokesman said eventually they will be sold separately as upgrade options, but there is no timeline for that, nor is there information of how much the security-lane option will cost on its own.

The four to six inches of additional space on JetBlue's A320 and E190 jetliners costs $10 to $75 per one-way flight, depending on the distance. JetBlue said in January the extra legroom generated more than $85 million in revenue in 2010.

The expedited security lanes are in Austin, Texas; Baltimore; Buffalo, N.Y.; Charlotte, N.C.; Chicago; Fort Lauderdale and Jacksonville, Fla.; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport; Newark, N.J.; San Francisco; Seattle and Washington's Dulles International Airport. JetBlue will add Boston to the list in mid-July, the carrier said, and other destinations will come later.

How to find an affordable family vacation

Many families desire to go on vacation but cannot due to the cost of vacation. Finding an affordable family vacation is very easy if only you can do is a little bit of research. Once you start searching for it on the internet, you will likely come across ways by which you can have a fun-filled and affordable family vacation. Now, i have discovered overtime that you can have an affordable family vacation in three ways. One is through using online vacation couples, two, vacation packages and price reductions.

Online vacation coupons
You can get this by searching the internet through the search engines. Look for the hotels, restaurants, resort, theme parks of your vacation destinations. It is usually displayed on their website. You can either fill it online or print it out. The coupons offer deals and discount for your vacation destination. This can save you enormous sum of money when you use it.

Vacation packages
Most vacation destinations like resorts (theme park resort, golf resort and beach resorts) offer vacation packages. Most of them are an all-inclusive package which can save you a tremendous amount of money.
An all-inclusive package at a resort mean that all your meals, and drinks are included in the price of your room. So you'll have a place to stay, eat, and a place to party if you want - all for one price! The only thing here is that you may have to get to your destination at your own expense.

However, there are other all-inclusive plans that include airfare, transportation to and from the airport to the hotel, and then they throw in the meals, drinks, etc. with the price as well.

I think this is the best type of all-inclusive package you should look for because it saves you money and you know what you are paying for upfront which means no surprises.

Vacation packages can be found online or by speaking to a professional travel agent.

Price reduction
Many vacation destinations offers price reduction to vacationing families. They offer substantial reduction in price for children. These can be found online at vacation resorts, hotels and theme parks.

However large or small the discount, many families enjoy saving the money.

When searching for an affordable family vacation destination, you can search using a number of methods I outlined above. It is either you look online for vacation coupons, go for vacation packages or look for price reduction. Any method you choose will ultimately lead you to your goal of finding an affordable family vacation.

3 great ideas of where to spend your summer vacation

When selecting a summer vacation destination, it is important that you do not limit yourself.  You are encouraged to find the vacation destination of your dreams.  Once you closely examine the hotels, restaurants, amusement parks, or beaches that your selected destination has to offer, you can easily plan for the vacation of your dreams. Below are some suggestions for a summer vacation.

1. Beaches
If the beach sounds like the perfect summer vacation destination, you have a number of options.  Popular beaches, that are designed for those on a budget in the United States may include, but are not limited to, Virginia Beach, Pensacola Beach, and Long Beach, Daytona beache, Myrtle beach which are known as vacation hotspots You can plan a beach vacation in the Caribbean or overseas; however, the cost of travel will likely increase the cost of your vacation.

2. Golf resorts

If you are someone who loves golfing, you may want to examine the golf resorts in and around the Untied States.  Many popular golf courses are located in Myrtle Beach, Newport Beach, and Scottsdale.  If you are on a budget, you can easily benefit from purchasing a resort package.  Many popular golf resorts, in the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean offer packages that offer accommodations that may include travel, hotel stays, golf course visits, and dining.

Golf resorts are popular vacation destinations for many individuals, but many can be expensive.  If you are unable to obtain a discount vacation package, but you still want to your vacation to have a focus on golf, you have a number of options.  Many golf resorts allow vacationers to play on their courses, even if they are not staying at the resort.  It is also possible to golf at well-known golf courses that are not considered resorts.  As with a beach vacation, you may be able to save a large amount of money by staying at a hotel or dinning away from a golf resort.

3. Theme parks and amusement parks
These are popular vacation destinations, especially for those with children.  If you and your family are interested in vacationing at a United States theme park, you have a number of options.  Theme park resorts are similar to, the above mentioned, golf resorts.  A large number of well-known theme park resorts, including Orlando Studios, Disneyland, and Disney World can be selected, even if you are on a budget. Many of these resorts offer vacation packages that include hotel stays, theme park use, onsite dinning, and much more.

Summer Vacations: Why Your Family Should Take One

Each year, a large number of families make the decision to take a summer vacation.  Despite the fact that a large number of individuals do vacation during the summer months, there are even more families that do not.  Which type of family are you?

There are a number of reasons why a particular family may be unable to take a family vacation.  One of the most common reasons involves the cost.  Unfortunately, many individuals mistakenly believe that a vacation has to be an extravagant adventure. It doesn’t matter whether you travel to the closest amusement park, camp overnight at a state park, or travel around the world, each can be considered a summer vacation.

In addition to the cost of a vacation, a large number of families are unable to take a family vacation due to their busy schedules.  Summer vacations are popular because they are often the only time that a family can take a break from their daily activities.  If you are able to set aside time, whether it be three days or three weeks, you are encouraged to schedule a summer vacation with your family.  Doing so has an unlimited number of benefits.

Perhaps, the greatest benefit of scheduling a summer vacation with your family is the amount of time that you will be able to spend together.  In this day in age, many families are rarely able to spend time together.  Long work hours, homework, and busy sports schedules often prevent a family from enjoying dinner or other fun activities together.  In some cases, a summer vacation is the only way that a family can spend uninterrupted time together.

The relaxation that a summer vacation will provide your family with is another benefit of scheduling one.  Today, children must operate and function differently than they had to in the past.  School age children are often bombarded with large amounts of homework, on a daily basis.  This homework, along with active sport schedules and pressure to be the best, can be difficult for children to handle.  A summer vacation may provide them with the rest and relaxation that they need and deserve.

In addition to your children receiving relaxation, it is quite possible that you and your spouse could as well.  It is true that children have a lot of pressure placed on them, but so do parents.  Scheduling a summer vacation with your family will give you the opportunity to forget about work related issues and home cleaning. These are some of the problems and issues that only a summer vacation could cure.

If you are interested in scheduling a summer vacation, you and your family are encouraged to pick a destination together.  Selecting a summer vacation destination as a family will enable everyone to have access to fun filled activities.  In addition to selecting the perfect family vacation, your children may experience a feeling of importance.  This feeling of importance if often generated from having an input on a large decision, such as your next summer vacation destination.

As previously mentioned, a large number of activities can be considered a summer vacation.  If you are interesting in taking a vacation this summer, you and your family should take the time to find the perfect summer vacation destination.  Why would you want to continue to spend your summers around the house, especially when everyone could be enjoying themselves away from home?
